<c>Beijing<info>Mao Zedong was one of the founders of the Chinese Communist party in 1921, and founded the People's Republic of China in 1949. He is regarded, along with Karl Marx and V. I. Lenin, as one of the three great theorists of Marxian communism. #e <t>massacre<d>1989 Jun 3<c>Beijing<n>Tiananmen Square<info>The Tiananmen Square Massacre in Beijing in June 1989 brought to a tragic end 6 weeks of prodemocracy demonstrations by Chinese students and workers. More than 1 million people a day were in Tiananmen Square demanding political reform. Party secretary Zhao Ziyang was conciliatory, but the paramount leader, Deng Xiaoping, had already resolved on a crackdown. Martial law was declared on May 20, and the People's Liberation Army was summoned to clear the capital. On the night of June 3-4, PLA units swept into the center of Beijing, clearing Tiananmen Square and killing between 800 and 1,000 civilians in the immediate area. A nationwide crackdown on the prodemocracy movement followed.<ref>Grolier
